THE BEANS STORY · WHERE BLOOM-A-BEAN BEGAN

A beginning rooted in care.

Bloom-a-Bean™ is rooted in Janepher Otieno’s childhood Beans Story. After her family was forced to leave Uganda and rebuild their lives in Kenya, her mother planted a can of dry beans for a future harvest. To a hungry child, the wait felt like a century.

For more than three months, Janepher and her siblings weeded, watered and protected the beans. One can of seeds became many cans at harvest. The experience taught lessons she carried into adulthood: patience, hope, trust, care, and the potential held within a seed.

Years later, her work in nursing education brought another influence: understanding financial wellbeing as part of whole-person and family health. Bloom-a-Bean brings these roots together through story, practical learning and thoughtful choices.

The whole-child picture.

Bloom-a-Bean brings together financial learning, emotional awareness, story and practical experience. A child’s questions, feelings and everyday choices are part of the lesson.

Families can practise a little at a time: planting a bean, noticing its growth, saving for something meaningful, sharing, helping and pausing before a decision.

Part of The Bloom Umbrella.

The Bloom Umbrella’s mission is human flourishing through better decisions. Bloom-a-Bean carries that mission into money learning and family life, with the Tula Pause™ as a practice that grows with the learner.

LEARNING THAT GROWS

Choose a seed.
Give it care. Give it time.

Growing a bean and growing a healthy relationship with money work the same way. You choose a seed. You prepare the soil. You water it, give it light—and it isn’t ready tomorrow.

The wait becomes a lesson in patience, care and thoughtful choices. A living plant gives a family something to notice, talk about and return to together.

01

Plant.

Begin with one small activity and a question your child can explore.

02

Practise.

Return to everyday choices: saving, sharing, waiting, helping and trying again.

03

Notice growth.

Look back together. What changed in the plant? What changed in the way you chose?

Let’s grow this together.
