How Bloom-a-Bean supports money learning

Created by Janepher Otieno, a nurse educator with experience teaching family nursing, pediatrics and communications. The approach brings story, developmental understanding and practical family learning together.

STORY

A choice children can explore.

Characters and familiar situations create room to talk about wants, mistakes and the next thoughtful step.

AGE-ALIGNED LEARNING

Confidence before complexity.

Activities are designed around each stage, with questions adapted to the individual child.

EVERYDAY PRACTICE

Small habits, repeated.

Saving, sharing, waiting and choosing become opportunities to practice together.

LEARNING THAT GROWS

Choose a seed.
Give it care. Give it time.

Growing a bean and growing a healthy relationship with money work the same way. You choose a seed. You prepare the soil. You water it, give it light—and it isn’t ready tomorrow.

The wait becomes a lesson in patience, care and thoughtful choices. A living plant gives a family something to notice, talk about and return to together.

01

Plant.

Begin with one small activity and a question your child can explore.

02

Practice.

Return to everyday choices: saving, sharing, waiting, helping and trying again.

03

Notice growth.

Look back together. What changed in the plant? What changed in the way you chose?

STORIES. PRACTICE. FAMILY CONVERSATION.

A collection growing with your child.

STORY

See a choice unfold.

Kofi stories create room to talk about feelings, mistakes, repair and the next thoughtful step.

PRACTICE

Make learning tangible.

Family workbooks connect money ideas with hands-on activities and a real bean-growing journey.

GUIDANCE

Learn alongside them.

Companion guides help grown-ups support the lesson through questions, encouragement and everyday practice.

The collection is being reviewed and renewed. Revised editions will show their age range, contents and format clearly.

THE BEANS STORY · WHERE BLOOM-A-BEAN BEGAN

A beginning rooted in care.

Bloom-a-Bean™ is rooted in Janepher Otieno’s childhood Beans Story. After her family was forced to leave Uganda and rebuild their lives in Kenya, her mother planted a can of dry beans for a future harvest. To a hungry child, the wait felt like a century.

For more than three months, Janepher and her siblings weeded, watered and protected the beans. One can of seeds became many cans at harvest. The experience taught lessons she carried into adulthood: patience, hope, trust, care, and the potential held within a seed.

Years later, her work in nursing education brought another influence: understanding financial wellbeing as part of whole-person and family health. Bloom-a-Bean brings these roots together through story, practical learning and thoughtful choices.
